Asbestos & Lead Paint O&Ms

Asbestos is a general term used for a group of six, naturally occurring silicate minerals: Chrysotile, Amosite, Crocidolite, Anthophyllite, Tremolite and Actinolite. Asbestos was used in a wide variety of everyday products, including floor tiles, ceiling tiles, roofing, brakes, siding and insulation of attics, walls and pipes and is commonly found in commercial, industrial and residential structures constructed before the 1990s.

Homes built prior to 1980 are very likely to contain lead-based paint whereas consumer indoor paint produced in North America after 1992 is almost certain to be free of lead.

Leaded paint becomes a health hazard when it begins to deteriorate (chip, flake, peel, or crack). In an undisturbed state, surfaces covered with leaded paint pose a health risk if chewed by children or pets. When disposing of building materials analyses for lead or leachate lead may be required by landfill authorities.
